Ty Dolla $ign Joins Forces With Charli XCX, Tinashe And Cashmere Cat

Norwegian producer Cashmere Cat is becoming the go to producer at the moment. He produced Ariana Grande‘s brilliant Be My Baby last year and also popped up on Kanye West’s Wolves last week. Now he’s produced the latest Ty Dolla $ign single with Stargate and got Charli XCX and Tinashe on board as well. It’s an all star lineup for Drop That Kitty which will appear on Ty’s debut album “coming soon”, according to his YouTube.

The track centres around XCX’s abrasive hook, with Ty and Tinashe delivering silky smooth vocals to perfectly juxtapose the hook. Before Fancy Charli XCX would have been such an odd choice for a hip-hop track but now she’s suddenly become the Ashanti of this decade, which we’re fine with.

Tinashe Jumps On The Remix Of Nick Jonas’ ‘Jealous’

When we first started this, we had a pretty good idea of the sort of artists we’d be writing about. Yep, Tinashe was most certainly on our list, but we’re not so sure about her duet partner, Nick Jonas. Yes, we are talking about the youngest Jonas brother who is now a crutch-grabbing, Usher-aspiring, grown-adult. His third self-titled album gave birth to Jealous- a smooth, beat-stomping track which we’re actually happy to admit, we’re quite smitten by. Today, he’s dropped the remix which features RnB lady-of-the-moment, Tinahse. Tinashe lays down a sweltering verse, helping Jonas to shed his teeny-bopper skin and embrace words like “dick” and “fuck”. Altogether it doesn’t actually sound that bizarre. Maybe Nick Jonas really is all grown up now.

Tinashe makes a ‘Bet’ with Dev Hynes

We’re loving everything we’ve heard of Tinashe‘s forthcoming album, Aquarius and that love continues with the drop of another track, Bet. Bet features Dev Hynes but not as you’ve heard him before. Hynes usually revels in throwback RnB numbers a la Solange‘s Losing You, but here he closely follows Tinashe‘s aesthetic and turns out a bass-heavy, contemporary tune. Tinashe sounds brilliant as per usual, winding her way through slightly more unconventional melodies than she’s used to- think more Kelela than Jhene Aiko. It’s an interesting cut that has us hyped to hear what the rest of the album has in store. Bring on 7 October.

10 Songs You Need To Hear This Week

It’s Friday and we know what you’re thinking- “gotta go downstairs, gotta have my cereal”. You’re completely right for thinking this; breakfast is without a doubt one of the most important meals of the day, but we’ve got one more piece of sustenance to prepare you for the weekend- new music. While you’re slurping down your high-in-sugar healthy muesli, taste some of these tunes that you might have missed during another busy week of Big Brother, The Bachelor and David & Margaret at the Movies (sigh).

Kero Kero Bonito- Sick Beat (Danny L Harle Remix)

You know we love a lil’ bit of PC Music here at the interns and this week we were delivered some more from the honey-nest of their Soundcloud. Danny Harle, who’s part of the PC Music bunch has remixed this super kawaii track by London group, Kero Kero Bonito. The band have already done a lot of PC Music’s work by creating a song that is incredible kitsch but Harle adds more bubblegum synths, shooting it further into the realm of video games. With Harle on board, the title holds even more relevance.

RL Grime- Reminder (Feat. How To Dress Well)

RL Grime’s last track, Core, was a minefield of alarms and abrasive sounds, but he’s taken it down a notch on Reminder including our ultimate bae, How To Dress Well. As such, RL Grime happily obliges in making a moody RnB track that suits Tom Krell’s vocals down to the ground. If RL Grime’s latest album, Core, is meant to represent some sort of war, then this is the calm before the storm. It’s beautiful melodic, textured and probably the most gentle thing this LA producer has churned out.

Lapalux- Movement I, II & III

Lapalux is the ultimate purveyor of smooth electronica. Guuurl off his debut album Nostalchic was one of the best songs of last year and this one doesn’t slip on quality whatsoever. As the title suggests, it’s really split up into three distinct parts. The first is gentle and atmospheric, the second features vocals and is much denser while the third lays down the beat and jitters along. I suppose you could call it the Bohemian Rhapsody of contemporary electronica. Galileo!

Shay Lia- 3 Months

As well as serving up brilliant solo material (have YOU heard Leave Me Alone?), Kaytranada has been making a name as a formidable producer. Here here puts together a smooth, pulsating beat to lay beneath Montreal Shay Lia’s 3 Months. In many ways the track returns the favour. Shay Lia featured on Kaytranada’s Leave Me Alone. On that one, the producers future RnB beat took centre-stage but here it’s Lia’s vocals that steal the show. They are addictively sulky, sounding like the end of a burning cigarette.

Made In Heights- Ghosts

If you haven’t heard Made In Heights, Death, yet we’ll give you a moment to go and right your wrongs.

Right, now you’ve done so, here’s the latest track from the American duo, Ghosts. Much like Death, the track is a masterful display of ambient, RnB with the vocal of Kelsey Bulkin sounding like candy clouds. The whole affair is completely effortless with melodies that will blow your mind without you even knowing it. If it all floats over you, give it another chance. The unobtrusive nature of it is part of its eventual charm.

Jack U- Take U There (Feat. Kiesza)

Skrillex and Diplo’s Jack U’s collaboration has been teased for a number of weeks now and finally they’ve bestowed upon us the golden collaboration. Along for the ride is throwback vocalist, Kiesza who lays down a crystalline vocal alongside Skrill and Dip’s bipolar beat. The chorus is like a rush of blood to the head with Kiesza’s flighty vocals meeting the trap-based beat.

Frames & Elizabeth Rose- Intentions

This is our Australia-represent inclusion to 10 Songs this week and what a doozy it is. All-round cool chick, Elizabeth Rose has teamed up with fellow Aussie producer Frames for a double A-side single that features this tune and another one titled Anywhere. The two go together like spilt red wine and bicarb soda, with Rose sounding completely at home over Frame’s four-to-the-floor, late-night beat.

Jessie Ware- Kind of…Sometimes…Maybe

Jessie Ware’s, Tough Love, is shaping up to be one cracker of a record. Kind of…Sometimes…Maybe is the fourth track we’ve heard from the able and it’s penned by Miguel, meaning that it’s destined to become a bedroom anthem. Not in the late night, dirrrttttyyy way though- it’s a sweet, love song that plods along with Ware’s whispy coos. She tweeted saying, “Enjoy and have a whisky with it”. Well we’ve had seven and it’s getting better and better.

Zola Jesus- Go (Blank Sea)

Big-ass ballad alert. If Dangerous Days taught us anything, it’s that Zola Jesus would be embracing big pop melodies on her forthcoming album, Taiga, and her new track Go (Black Sea) completely confirms that. It’s an unashamedly huge ballad in the way that I Wanna Know What Love Is , but with far less ‘80s-bizarre and a little more emotional finesse. There’s beautifully layered vocals, hard-hitting beats and a chorus that will smack you right in the stomach. Get ready for Taiga, it’s going to be more exciting than the upcoming Ninja Turtles movie and that we can guarantee.

Tinashe- Feels Like Vegas

On first thought, Vegas feels like bright lights, lost money and too many drinks which inevitably ends with a horror morning. You can rest easy though, Tinashe’s Feels Like Vegas sounds nothing like that. It’s effortlessly smooth and classy and gives us plenty of time to revel in her unbelievable vocals. Schoolboy Q is along for the ride but he really does nothing but adds another name to a song that Tinahse owns. Give us the album now, thanks.

Tinashe ‘Feels Like Vegas’

The release of Tinashe‘s debut album Aquarius  is drawing closer and so far we’ve heard 2 On and Pretend from the record. We can now add Feels Like Vegas to that list which is a pretty stellar trio to be leading up an album with. Stargate have taken production duties for this one delivering a mid-tempo number which is a playground for Tinashe’s soulful voice. Schoolboy Q also pops up a few times but doesn’t deliver a full verse, rather he just adds a few lines for good measure.

The New Future of Future R&B

The Nineties gave us many things. Scrunchies, light-up sneakers, Sister Act 1 and 2 and the weird assurance that high waisted, terry towelling shorts were always appropriate attire. A Golden Age for all things Goldie Hawn and Steve Martin, it was also an explosive era for R&B with artists like D’Angelo responsible for crafting out the genre as we now know it. Undeniably, that R&B sound so synonymous with the glimmering decade, has outlived many of the artists producing it. It’s since become somewhat of an amorphous, chameleon genre, snaking its way through hip-hop, rap and new soul, as per the patron saint of all we do here at the interns, Solange.

Future R&B is the genre’s most recent and progressive survival tactic. It takes that sonic perfection Timbaland and Aaliyah were once working towards and pushes it further. It’s a movement heavily influenced by the underground with producers like James Blake, Kaytranada, Cashmere Cat, Bondax, Ryan Hemsworth and Jamie XX, all considered integral to reinvigorating the classic, gossamer sounds of Mariah, Janet, Lauryn and Brandy. With access to warm gooey synths, glitchy stilted samples and banging drums, producers have been integral to its arrival come survival on the club scene. While it was initially a genre dominated by male artists nudging open the doors to the new-world possibilities of R&B such as The Weeknd, Drake, Frank Ocean and Miguel, since 2012 ensuring the survival of R&B has been a charge placed firmly in hands of emerging female artists such as Tink, Tinashe, FKA Twigs and Kelela. Now less amorphous than defiantly all-encompassing, it’s a genre open to sparse, minimal beats, dark industrial instrumentals, spoken word, rap, and of course, a whole lot of the electronic synth we know and love. It’s fair to say the honey-drippin’ R&B of the early nighties just got a whole more abrasive and a whole lot more modern.

Chicago + Lauryn Hill + How to Dress Well = Tink

At not even 20 years old, this Chicago-based rapper, come certified songstress has been working for everything and then some, steadily carving out a name for herself over the last two years. Eluding easy categorisation, Tink’s honey-flavored narratives oscillate from emotionally-charged R&B vocals lamenting a lover’s infidelity turned unexpected pregnancy (sound like Usher anyone?), to flat out drill raps and get-low hip hop traps. Like 2013’s brash announcement of arrival, Fingers Up, Tink is constantly challenging the gender expectations of Chicago’s male dominated hip-hop scene and is  a unique hook in a city where sky rocketing crime rates and explicit drill music usually hold the limelight. Although Tink’s production choices lack predictability, she moves seamlessly between genres with a matured self assurance, telling of an artist going after what she wants. Having made the decision to remain unassigned Tink has worked with the likes of Chicago locals Lil Durk and Sasha Go Hard, Jeremih, Tom Krell from How to Dress Well and New York’s Future Brown, in addition to releasing four killer mixtapes of her own, from 2013‘s Boss Up to this year’s Winter Garden 2 which attracted a 7.6 from Pitchfork (take that Lana Del Ray).

LA + Christina Aguilera + Ryan Hemsworth = Tinashe

Young gun Tinashe, cites James Blake, Little Dragon and Bon Iver among her major influences and grew up in a Californian household filled with Sade, The Jacksons, Whitney Houston, and Mariah Carey while learning how to sing by mimicking Christina Aguileria’s vocal runs. At first encounter, her voice is yet another light and airy treat, encased in a smooth, oozy post-production caramel, befitting of any young LA hopeful with a girl band history, and a couple of obligatory  TV appearances under her belt. Here however, is where you can check any further assumptions about the trajectory of this girl’s career at the door. Despite being signed to major label RCA Records, Tinshe’s last 3 projects have been almost entirely self-produced, free, downloadable mixtapes, either aided by social media’s infinite connections, or a crowd-sourced effort. With her first official RCA Records debut, Aquarius, a year in the making, she’s made over 100 tracks in the refining process. Dedicated and determined, Tinashe’s music emerges from a dichotomous desire to showcase  her languid, down tempo R&B vocals and the dark, grit of her lyrical content. As she says “I always like to play with stuff that’s more on the darker side of the spectrum… Because I consider myself to have quite a ‘sweet’, quote unquote, voice. It’s high, it’s soft, and so I want to contrast that, have some juxtaposition in the beat. I like there to be a lot of bass, a lot of grit, I like it to be really dark and heavy.” A girl who clearly knows what she’s doing, Tinashe is at the forefront of the future R&B sound and is constantly finding new ways to resurrect  that classic 90s sound through the electronic sound popular today. Tinashe has worked with the likes of Ryan Hemsworth, producer XXYXXA$AP Rocky, Future, Mike WiLL and Travi$ Scott.

FKA Twigs

Unless you run scared at the thought of feeling a little tingle between your thighs, or are having an enduring dry spell, you’ve undoubtedly heard of, slash shuddered to, the sounds of Young Turks artist FKA Twigs. Carnal like no other, Twigs’ catalogue, EP1 and EP2, is filled with sparse, stripped-back, down right naked and staccato pulses that quiver below a perfected whisper of superhuman falsetto. Unlike the narrative turns and story telling of Tink, who similarly debuted in 2012, FKA deals with the deed less plot fillers and supplementary characters. Water Me, Papa Pacify and most recently Two Weeks, are straight up sex jams to rival the pinacle of all sex jams, R. Kelly classic Bump N’ Grind.

Kelela remembers hearing Aaliyah’s 1 in a Million for the first time, while driving down the streets of her home town and becoming instantly obsessed. Obsessed in a way, that from that moment forward, Aaliyah, Faith Evans, Mariah, all divas of the day, would infect, and take over her production. Mixing and melting within her to form a unique take on an already contemporary sound. With a desire to be deliberately off-putting, interrupt the space and baffle people in the best way possible, Kelela’s brand of Future R&B, is like an ice-cream melting with the promise of a brain freeze: In your face, and jarring but irresistible and totally undeniable. Having released her mixtape The Cut 4 Me, in September 2013, Kelela has  been signed to Solange’s label Saint Heron, worked with the likes of Night Slugs, Jam City, Tink and Girl Unit, and, keeping it in the family, has featured on Beyonce’s blog.
