Listen to alt-J’s ‘Every Other Freckle’

Every Other FreckleIt’s been an interesting ride into alt-J‘s second album, This Is All Yours. Their first single Hunger of the Pine featured a Miley Cyrus sample while their second single, Left Hand Free was an Americana track which the band claimed to not really like themselves. Every Other Freckle is the most straightforward offering yet, focussing on their trademark harmonies and finicky guitar-work. There’s a bit of distortion in there which separates it from the crystalline production of An Awesome Wave, presenting something that’s both gritty and a little calypso flavoured. Once again, they’re proving very difficult to classify which is probably a good thing.

Hear the Sampha-produced ‘For You’ by London newcomer Fabiano Palladino

Fabiana Palladino

We’ve heard British singer/songwriter Sampha alongside SBTRKT and Drake but rarely behind the production desk with new artists. For You is the debut track from London artists Fabiano Palladino with Sampha taking on production duties. Palladino’s vocals are ethereal and soulful and as such, Sampha’s understated type of production fits her like a glove. It’s an RnB-inspired track leaning towards a more organic, Jessie Ware style with subtle string arrangements and ambient beats. The loved-up track is being released via London label Double Denim which has recently released efforts from Empress Of and Bayou.

Ariana Grande and Big Sean team up again on ‘Best Mistake’

Ariana Grande My Everything

You’d be forgiven for being a little confused by the latest offerings by songstress Ariana Grande. Problem was a ’90s throwback banger, Break Free was an EDM, Zedd production and this latest one is a contemporary RnB mid-tempo. Nonetheless she’s nailed each of them, with Best Mistake destined to become another hit. Flowing piano’s and an unobtrusive beat lay behind Grande’s floating vocals which effortlessly cruises through the understated melody. Big Sean steps in on the second verse to transform the song into a track reminiscent of J.Lo and LL Cool J’s All I Have. Grande’s record, My Everything, drops in Australia next Friday. Read why we think it will be one of the years best here.

Ryan Hemsworth unveils Seattle producer Lucas’ ‘Keep U Warm’

shh008: Lucas - Keep U Warm

Ryan Hemsworth has been releasing free songs from upcoming producers every week via his Secret Songs series. The latest to emerge from that is Seattle Producer, Lucas’ Keep U Warm. The track is an RnB-laced, mid-tempo number, just the way Hemsworth likes it and features noises from crickets to video game SFX. Of Lucas, Hemsworth says, “I think he’s really part of this next movement that’s going to be run by producers who grew up caring more about rock and R&B than dance music.” The release follows Lucas’ affecting remix of Hemsworth’s One For Me last month. Keep U Warm can be downloaded for free below.

Kaytranada asks ‘Leave Me Alone’ on first track from upcoming EP

Leave Me Alone (feat. Shay Lia)

Canadian producer Kaytranada is set to touch down in the country over New Years for the Beyond The Valley Festival on Phillip Island. No doubt stirring some more excitement for that visit he’s released Leave Me Alone, the first track from his So Bad EP which is set to be released via XL Records. With assistance from vocalist Shay Lia, Kaytranada has crafted an understated track with bass that bubbles under and sporadic vocal samples. It’s ambient with a hint of RnB and most definitely ready for early-morning club revellers. Bring on his debut album, due later this year.

Jessie Ware shares ‘Say You Love Me’

jessieeeee Jessie Ware Say You Love Me

Last week Jessie Ware released details of her forthcoming album, Tough Love, which is out 6 October via PMR. Today she’s released another track from the record called Say You Love Me once again produced by Benny Blanco/Two Inch Punch duo, BenZel. It’s a breezy, emotion-filled track that almost lifts off into power ballad territory, only to pull it right back in when necessary. The climatic end sees Ware allow her voice to reach full flight, a mode we rarely hear on her recorded material. The whole way through she sounds exceptional.

Hear what Flume does with Arcade Fire’s ‘Afterlife’

One would’ve thought it would be hard to beat Flume‘s year in 2013, but he’s doing a good job of competing with it in 2014. He recently played three sold out shows in New York, stunned a packed out Lollapalooza crowd and delivered remixes for Lorde, Seekae and Chet Faker. Now he’s adding to that with a remix of Arcade Fire’s Afterlife from their 2013 record Reflektor. Flume chops and manipulates Win Butler’s vocals while laying down a subtly climatic, ambient sound scape. Still, it maintains the same uplifting vibe of the original. It’s a little bit softer than Flume’s past work but no less effective.

He’s pulled in some pretty stellar guests to kick things off with Kelela and Ade both joining him on World Restart. Justin Vernon and Astronautalis drop surprise collaborative album, ‘De Oro’

Justin Vernon of Bon Iver fame and Minneapolis rapper Astronautalis have done a Beyonce, dropping making their collaborative album available to stream today under the name Jason Feathers. In 2012, Astronautalis told City Pages that the pair had been working together on an album and last week the pair dropped a trailer, however, the project was not expected this early. Vernon is no stranger to working on hip-hop projects having already collaborated with Kanye West on both Yeezus and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.

The album, titled De Oro, will be made available for digital purchase on August 19 but it is currently streaming over at Pitchfork. According to a mysterious press release Jason Feathers, the moniker of the project, is “a red-chested god-bassed Southern rapper in a fancy white suit”.
