Alright everyone, that’s enough surprises for one week thanks.
11. Glowie – Cruel
Glowie had the ~industry~ buzzing with her last track Body and now she’s doubling down with the follow-up. Tayla Parx co-wrote this one with Oscar Görres (who produced tracks on Troye Sivan’s Bloom) and, of course, Glowie. It’s a slick, near-faultless pop song that’s going to spread her name far and wide.
10. MARINA – Orange Trees
MARINA has popped out another bop, this time aiming for the European summer with Orange Trees. She’s kept it simple with the last two singles and this one is no different. It’s a straight-forward piece of excellent pop.
9. Rich The Kid – Whoah (Feat. Miguel & Ty Dolla $ign)
There are few things I wouldn’t do to hear Miguel and Ty Dolla $ign on the same track and thankfully I’ve had to do none of them because Rich The Kid made it happen. Whoah slides straight over you with an incredible smoothness.
8. Tierra Whack – Unemployed
We’re just going to give a permanent spot on this weekly list for Tierra Whack. She’s dropping tracks every week at the moment and it’s turned into a stunning five week streak. Unemployed serves bars, culminating in the hardest cut she’s dropped yet.
7. The Kite String Tangle – P()L4R
The Kite String Tangle came out of nowhere with a new one this week and it’s a pretty stunning return. He’s working with pitched-down vocals and atmospheric instrumentals on P()L4R and it’s got us feeling all the feels. It’s not a departure but an extension on what he’s been doing and it’s a very welcome display of growth.
6. Jamila Woods – EARTHA
Jamila Woods’ ZORA is one of the best songs of the year so far and now she’s followed it up by paying tribute to US activist and entertainer Zora Kitt with a finessed, richly soulful cut. It’s a post argument jam that questions what was said but also has a strong atmosphere of self-love.
5. Flume – How To Build A Relationship (Feat. JPEGMAFIA)
Flume doesn’t get enough credit for his hip-hop production but How To Build A Relationship deserves to be heralded. JPEGMAFIA’s bars match Flume’s intensity but he also has the technique to manoeuvre these very weird beats. It’s pretty spectacular.
4. Burna Boy & DJDS – Thuggin
Burna Boy and DJDS gave us a surprise EP today and while the whole thing is great this one is tugging at the heartstrings. Hearing Burna Boy croon over a dark, brooding DJDS beat is exactly what we didn’t know we needed. Incredible.
3. Donatachi – Do What I Want (Feat. Evangeline)
Australian producer Donatachi has been slowly building a crystalline discography, each release better than the next, and he’s finally found euphoria on his latest Do What I Want. Do What I Want sees him team up with Melbourne artist Evangeline and everything sounds perfect from the first listen.
2. Lizzo – Tempo (Feat. Missy Elliott)
Lizzo is giving us all the angles with the singles from her forthcoming album Cuz I Love You. She gave us self-love on Juice, passion on Cuz I Love You and now she’s serving sex with new single Tempo. Tempo is a sweaty, relentless club jam that rattles the ribs. It’s unlike anything Lizzo has ever done before, embracing an early ’00s hip-hop sound with the Queen of that era – Missy Elliott.
1. Tame Impala – Patience
They’re back with ’90s keys, disco-vibes and a helluva groove. We fell in love from the first listen and there’s no way we have patience to wait for the album now.
