Whoever said December is for Christmas songs only?
8. Taylor Swift – …Ready For It? (BloodPop Remix)
Taylor Swift caught everyone by surprise when she delivered trap-inspired verses on …Ready For It? but BloodPop has come and sanded them down with his remix. After releasing his own song Friends with Justin Bieber and dropping a HAIM remix this year, BloodPop is coming into his own as a producer and this remix is another win.
7. HAIM – Walking Away (Feat. Mura Masa)
Walking Away is one of the most delicate cuts of HAIM’s Something To Tell You so it only makes sense that one of the most intricate producers around delivers a remix. Mura Masa rework of Walking Away is a masterful, textured affair that never sounds like he’s overdoing it.
6. Trippie Redd – Dark Knight Dummo (Feat. Travis Scott)
18-year-old Ohio rapper Trippie Redd is someone to keep a firm eye on next year particularly if he keeps tapping artists like Travis Scott for his tracks. He’s grabbed Scott for the aptly dark Dark Knight Dummo which comes after releasing two projects this year. The two artists share many aesthetic traits and so it’s unsurprising that they sound perfect together on this blurry cut that’s driven by woozy melodies.
5. Maya Hirasedo – See Me
Melbourne muso Maya Hirasedo has dropped her first track in a little while and it’s no doubt going to be delivered to plenty of ears. It’s a slick, dark R&B cut that explores the nuances of her soulful voice with minimal production.
4. SOPHIE – Ponyboy
SOPHIE has done another 180 turn, following up It’s Ok To Cry with the abrasive Ponyboy. This is the sort of thing we’re used to from her. It’s subtly melodic and sweet but also steely and hard with a beat that could rattle the speakers violently. It sounds like red-lining and there’s something thrilling about that.
3. Camila Cabello – Never Be The Same
Camila Cabello has dropped two new tracks off her forthcoming debut Camila, due early next year. Never Be The Same and Real Friends prove that Havana was no fluke and Cabello is here to stay. Never Be The Same is technically the lead track of the two and it’s a mighty mid-tempo, flavoured with some of the most interesting pop production this year.
2. Big Sean & Metro Boomin – Go Legend (Feat. Travis Scott)
Only Metro Boomin could turn Diana Ross’ Theme From Mahogany into a phenomenal beat and that’s what he does here on the opening track of Big Sean and Metro’s joint album Double Or Nothing. Travis Scott delivers the dark hook while Sean brings that sturdy confidence we’re so used to.
1. Charli XCX – Out Of My Head (Feat. Tove Lo and Alma)
Charli XCX has confirmed that her new mixtape Pop2 is coming next week and she’s unleashed the mighty first single Out Of My Head with Tove Lo and Alma. It’s another big, left-centre pop moment for Charli who has continuously churned them out this year. Tove Lo and Alma are also the perfect additions and it caps off a big year for both of them.
