10 Songs You Need To Hear This Week: Charli XCX, Lorde, Kaytranada And More

Written By Sam Murphy on 03/10/2017

Well, what a flippin' huge week.

10. Astrid S - Breathe

Astrid S has been releasing great singles for a little while now but she really garnered our attention with her heartbreaking few lines at the end of Lido's Everything album. This latest cut Breathe is a knockout pop track, beautifully produced while still leaving space for us to hear that gentle, crystalline voice.

9. Mabel - Finders Keepers

Mabel's releases are few and far between but everytime she gives us something she really delivers. Finders Keepers is her latest and it sees her go down the dancehall route, tapping Kojo Funds for bars at the beginning. Her voice gets us every time, it's just so silky and effortless and it really shines on this track.

8. GoldLink - Meditation (Feat. Jazmine Sullivan & Katranada)

GoldLink and Kaytranada are basically the ultimate artist/producer combination right now and their latest Meditation is just further proof. They’ve introduced US R&B singer Jazmine Sullivan into the fray for this latest cut which is wobbly, malleable and very, very groovy.

7. Jacques Greene - True (Feat. How To Dress Well)

Jacques Greene has just released his debut album Feel Infinite and this How To Dress Well collab True is on it. The two have collabed once before on the brilliant On Your Side so we were pretty confident that this one was going to be a knockout and it is. It’s an intense track that harnesses energy released with every blaring synth. How To Dress Well’s voice is fragile and melodic as always.

6. Jorja Smith - Beautiful Little Fools

Jorja Smith has blessed us with a new jam today Beautiful Little Fools. The slow-burning, soulful track sees Smith take her time with an idea sparked by The Great Gatsby. Smith was troubled by Daisy’s hope that her daughter would, “be a fool” and she used that concept to form the basis of the song.

5. Little Dragon - Sweet

Little Dragon have upped the tempo on their latest cut Sweet. The track is taken from their forthcoming record Season High and follows on from previous single High which was much more of a slow-burner. This one brings a Prince-esque funk to the table and will no doubt go down a treat on the dancefloor.

4. Fortunes. - Focus

Focus is Fortunes. first drop for 2017 and it's a really great start for them. The harmonies in all of their songs are pretty unbeatable and this song gives us a chance to hear them over a really minimal, spacious beat. They take their time on this one, weaving an unpredictable vocal melody through an equally unpredictable beat.

3. Alice Ivy - Get Me A Drink (Feat. E^ST & Charlie Threads)

Alice Ivy is one of the most talented producers in the country right now and she gets better with every release. Proof: her latest single Get Me A Drink is her best yet. She takes E^ST and Charli Threads into a world of hypnotic beats and circling synths. It feels like the moment directly after you have your first drink, when the world slows.

2. Lorde - Liability

We’re only just gathering our composure again after last week’s Lorde single Green Light and now she’s already given us another one. Liability is also taken from her forthcoming album Melodrama and it’s a gentle, emotional ballad – a stark contrast to its anthemic predecessor.

1. Charli XCX - 3AM (Pull Up) (Feat. MØ)

Most artists would be satisfied with this as a single but not Charli. Instead, it turns up on track two of a free mixtape which is extraordinary because it's an incredible song. It's back to the sort of darkness she served up on True Romance, a late night jam for those who make bad decision to cure loneliness in the early hours of the morning. MØ's inclusion at the end is a pretty inspired move too.
