Hot Or Not? Lady Gaga, The Strokes, Jay Z And More

Written By Sam Murphy on 06/01/2016

Our bi-weekly feature heralding the best stuff and thumbs-downing the bad stuff happening at the moment…

Lady Gaga, Mark Ronson And Kevin Parker
Lady Gaga's last proper album ARTPOP was a bit shit. She dedicated so much time to the concept that she forgot to write a good pop song. But now thanks to a bit of acting and an excellent performance of Til It Happens To You at the Oscars she's picked up her relevance and is ready to deliver us another earth-shatteringly, supermassive pop song. And what better man to call in than Tame Impala's Kevin Parker. Tame Impala's albums are pop records wrapped-up in psychedelic rock so he's proven that he has a strong pop muscle and together with Gaga and Ronson they should be able to create something magical. We'll take Yes, I'm Changing with a hint of Bloody Mary thanks very much.

PS. She's also hanging out with Father John Misty which is good news. Anything that keeps her away from Tony Bennett's jazz standards collection is good news really.

The Strokes
The Strokes have really been on a downward spiral since their debut album This Is It culminating in the weightless, nothingness that was Comedown Machine. It seems though, they're bucking that trend with their latest EP Future Present Past. It sees them regain some of that effortless grunt that has become more and more forced as their career has gone on. Julian Casablancas' voice in OBLIVIUS is powerful and ambitious. Their melodies are also cutting through all the fuzz better than ever. Perfect timing for a Splendour headline set.

The OVO Summer Drop
Drake's label and clothing line October's Very Own is gearing up for their summer drop and the look book is pretty damn swanky. They've recruited young mastermind John Ross for the book and decked him out in OVO long sleeves and polos alongside rapper Playboi Carti. We've got our eye on the yellow "October" long sleeve but we'll take anything we can get our hands on tbh. OVO has a flagship store in Toronto and LA but if you're not there you can cop online when they drop soon.

Chance The Rapper's Interview With Beats 1's Zane Lowe
Since starting on Beats 1 Zane Lowe has done interviews with everyone from Drake to Adele but but Chance brought a certain candidacy to his interview that made it the best yet. He talked about his friendship with Kanye and played demoes of songs he'd made with him, he revealed he's got a mixtape in the works with Childish Gambino and better yet, he talked about the music industry with a fresh approach rarely heard. On releasing free music he said, “It’s all about demonstrating the abilities of a person with a good team around him an idea of where they want to go.” He's stuck to his guns from day one and now he's touring the world without a label behind him. He'll even be in Australia later this year. Good things happen to good people.

Choosing The Song Of Summer
The whole of America and Europe is obsessed with choosing the song of summer before summer has even started but we're a little confused. What does one do once they've found the song of summer? The song of summer usually ends up being the biggest song of the three months classified as summer which coincidentally is also the three months we classify as winter. Therefore, the song of summer is also the song of winter. For the record, it will be Justin Timberlake's Can't Stop The Feeling which is very similar to consuming a box of imitation fruit loops every day for three months.

Just because we wanted in on the fun here's what we think could be the song of winter.

Jay Z
It's clear from the Fat Joe track and the latest Pusha T collaboration that Jay Z is plotting a comeback but do we really need it? His "comeback" following Beyoncé's Lemonade which tore him to shreds was a verse on a remix of All The Way Up that had him rap, "You know you made it when the fact/Your marriage made it is worth millions/Lemonade is a popular drink and it still is". Yep, his big response to Lemonade was, "Lemonade is a popular drink and it still is". He may as well be talking about dish water, that's how weak that line is.
giphyThat Justin Bieber Selfie
Is this not the bleakest underwear selfie you've ever seen in your life. It's like Calvin Klein emailed him and told him his contract stipulates one shirtless Calvin selfie a month, so he stripped off and put on a face that makes him look like he's in captive. Calvin, if you've got Justin, tell us what we need to do to get him back.

The Voice
The show is very daggy, that's fine. If you don't like that, don't watch it. It's not as big of a juggernaut as Australian Idol where you had every living moment of it shoved in your face so it's a thing that's possible to avoid. But we gotta talk about the judges. There has never been a more grating collection of people on a judging panel ever* and that's coming from someone who watched Redfoo on the X Factor for an entire season. If you have no idea what we're talking about take a quick peep of the action-packed performance below.
