Two years ago Lorely Rodriguez better known to us as Empress Of, dumped Don’t Tell Me on Soundcloud – a washed-out pop number that immediately caught the attention of most online music scrollers. It was a great song and she followed it up with a handful of other great songs, most notably Hat Trick, but then she disappeared for a bit. The problem with being a buzzworthy internet artist is that you run the risk of being forgotten if you’re gone for too long. Empress Of wasn’t forgotten because she returned in April with the knockout first single from this album Me. Water Water was a dark, pulsating effort that many heralded as her best offering yet and ever since April, she’s kept people excited about the album.

Me is an apt title for the record. With Terrible Records (run by Grizzly Bear’s Chris Taylor) behind her, she was offered the chance to work with a big-name producer but declined and produced it herself. Turns out that’s the best decision she could’ve made because it’s one of the year’s best debuts. It’s an intricate, left-centre pop record that you can simultaneously dance to and get lost in. The 10 tracks each match the quality of her previous outputs and, in fact, many also surpass.

Me is out Friday, 11th September.
