At first listen, Billie Black had us instantly captivated, initially with her debut I Waited For You and then with the minimal I Don't Need Another Lover. Now the London songstress has teamed up with the self-confessed "beat-slayer heartbreaker" Mura Masa for This Simple Pleasure and the result is confident and electronically-charged, with a hint of her trademark R&B. Black has slightly deviated from the mellowness featured in her previous tracks but her smooth vocals still shine, this time over a synth-driven beat (occasionally punctuated by a raindrop noise not too dissimilar to the one achieved by flicking your cheek while simultaneously opening your mouth. You know the one). According to Masa's Twitter account, the track was born over a few drinks at dinner. My dinners usually end in spilt glasses of wine and confusion over how to equally split the bill. 🙁
At just 19 years of age, these releases prove a promising future for Black and we're anticipating an EP release hopefully soon.
